It seems that being a demagogue in today's politics is the recipe for success.
Every speech, intervention or presentation is always filled with digression, helping to confuse voters, not addressing  main important needs in discussion. Also, taking advantage from the lately fraught economic  circumstances, promising impossible changes to the system  is also always a characteristic of these kind of individuals.
Another personality trait is a haughty attitude, as a defense mechanism of their own insecurities and defects.  There is  an hypothesis indicating the   more  flaws in character, well managed, make a far better populist  politician, making inevitable the fact that they could likely  be elected.
